First published in 1927, this travel book records Morton's motor tour around England in search of a country he fears is disappearing. He leaves London and moves through cathedral cities, market towns, villages, and bits of coastline, noting inns, churches, local customs, and chance conversations. The chapters are regional rather than strictly chronological: a sequence of stops in which history is read off stones and street names. He is interested in continuity, craft, and the look of places between the wars. The book is a popular itinerary and a mood of recovery after the First World War, not a political or economic survey.
