First published in 1872, this volume presents five supernatural narratives as papers from the files of the German physician Martin Hesselius. Green Tea follows a clergyman who, after heavy tea and solitary study, is haunted by a spectral monkey. The Familiar and Mr. Justice Harbottle treat a walking pursuer and a judge summoned before a court of the dead. The Room in the Dragon Volant is a Paris tale of a naive English traveler, a false romance, and a drugged coffin. Carmilla recounts a Styrian girl's intimacy with a visiting companion who is a vampire. The book is a set of independent medical-occult cases, not a single novel.
