First published in 1950, this wartime memoir is W. Stanley Moss's diary of a 1944 operation on German-occupied Crete. Moss and fellow SOE officer Patrick Leigh Fermor, working with Cretan andartes, ambush the car of General Heinrich Kreipe and take him into the mountains. The narrative follows the weeks of hiding, forced marches, and evasion as German search parties close in and the party tries to reach a pickup point on the coast. Moss records food, fatigue, the general's conversation, and the villagers who shelter them. The book is a first-person commando narrative, not a full history of the Cretan resistance.
