This second volume of medieval Icelandic prose, edited and translated by Magnus Magnusson, collects family sagas and shorter tales from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Among the longer works are Gisli's saga, Laxdæla saga, the saga of the sworn brothers, Vatnsdæla saga, Hen-Thorir's saga, and Grettir's saga, together with brief þættir such as Ivarr's tale and Hreidar's tale. The stories are set in Iceland and, at times, Norway and other Norse lands. They concern feud, outlawry, marriage alliances, verse-making, and the working of law at the Althing. Heroes are farmers and fighters whose honour, luck, and kin networks drive the action toward revenge or exile.
