Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This first volume of a two-part anthology of medieval Icelandic prose gathers family sagas and shorter tales in English translation. The longer works include Egil's saga, Eyrbyggja saga, Hrafnkel's saga, the saga of the people of Vopnafjord, the Confederates' saga, Gunnlaug's saga, and Njal's saga, together with the Vinland narratives of the Greenlanders and Eirik the Red and brief tales such as Audun's tale and the tale of Thorstein Staff-Struck. The stories are set in Iceland, Norway, and the western settlements. They concern feud, law at the Althing, poetry, voyage, and the honour of farming households whose disputes end in exile or revenge.
