First published in 1954, this novel follows Robert Neville, apparently the last uninfected man in a plague-emptied Los Angeles. By day he repairs his fortified house, hunts the vampiric sick who come after him at night, and works through medical books trying to understand the disease that has remade the city's people. By night he listens to them beat on his walls. Flashbacks fill in the epidemic and the deaths of his wife and daughter. The book is a survival narrative and a laboratory puzzle: a study of isolation and of what a last man becomes when the new majority has its own order.
