In the fairy-tale land of Ingary, Sophie Hatter, the eldest of three sisters in a hat shop in Market Chipping, is turned into an old woman by the Witch of the Waste. She leaves home and takes shelter in the moving castle of the wizard Howl, a vain, much-gossiped-about magician who shares the castle with the apprentice Michael and Calcifer, a fire demon bound to the hearth. Sophie keeps house, bargains with Calcifer, and is drawn into Howl's quarrel with the Witch and into a war between Ingary and a neighbouring prince. The novel is a comic fantasy about curses, contracts, and a castle that will not stay put.
