Charmain Baker, a bookish girl from a respectable family in the kingdom of High Norland, is sent to look after the house of her great-uncle William, the king's wizard, while he is away being cured by the elves. The house rearranges itself, cooks, and hides extra rooms; a dog named Waif attaches itself to her, and a boy called Peter arrives claiming to be an apprentice. Charmain discovers she has unused magical talent and that a predatory creature called a lubbock has designs on the royal line. Sophie, Howl, and the fire demon Calcifer, known from an earlier tale, are drawn into the household's troubles. The novel is a comic fantasy of housework, kingship, and hidden rooms.
