This history follows the Borgia family from its Spanish origins through its years at the centre of papal Rome. Hibbert concentrates on Rodrigo Borgia as Pope Alexander VI and on two of his children, Cesare and Lucrezia: the father's election, the use of church office and marriage to build a dynasty, Cesare's campaigns in the Romagna, and Lucrezia's successive marriages into Italian ruling houses. French invasion, condottieri, and rival Roman clans form the political weather. The narrative runs from the mid-fifteenth century to the family's collapse after Alexander's death and Cesare's fall. It is a political biography of one Renaissance house, not a general history of Italy.
