First published in 1870, this memoir of Jane Austen is written by her nephew, who drew on family papers and the memories of her siblings. It describes the Steventon rectory, the years in Bath and Southampton, and the settled routine at Chawton in which the novels were revised and issued. Austen-Leigh records her habits of composition, her correspondence, and the domestic tone the family wished to preserve, and he prints a cancelled chapter of Persuasion. The book is a Victorian family portrait, not a critical analysis of the six novels.
