First published in 1960, this memoir recounts Jessica Mitford's childhood among the six Mitford sisters in the household of Lord and Lady Redesdale, first at Asthall and then at Swinbrook in Oxfordshire. She describes the children's private language, the cupboard they called the Hons' cupboard, and the sisters' diverging politics as Diana and Unity move toward fascism while she reads left-wing papers in secret. The later chapters follow her elopement with Esmond Romilly, their time around the Spanish Civil War, and their life afterward in London and the United States. It is an autobiography of class, family, and refusal, not a joint life of the whole sisterhood.
