First published in 1938, this memoir records George Orwell's months in Spain in 1936-37 as a volunteer with the POUM militia on the Aragon front. He describes enlistment in Barcelona, trench warfare around Huesca, leave in a city splitting between revolutionary workers and the rising Communist-led police, the street fighting of May 1937, and his later wounding and flight after the POUM is suppressed. The book argues that the war's internal politics were as important as the fight against Franco. It is a first-person political and military testimony, not a general history of the Spanish Civil War.
