First published in 1973, this novel continues the naval career of Captain Jack Aubrey and the physician-naturalist Stephen Maturin. Aubrey, short of money after a prize-court disappointment, is given the old frigate Surprise and a voyage that takes him from England around the Cape toward India and the China seas. Maturin pursues intelligence work and the tangled affair of Diana Villiers, now living in India. The action includes storms, a diplomatic errand in the East, and a battle to protect a merchant convoy from a French squadron. It is the third book in the Aubrey-Maturin series, a historical naval novel of the Napoleonic wars.
