This history of science runs from Copernicus's 1543 account of a sun-centred cosmos to work at the end of the twentieth century. Gribbin follows astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, and biology as linked enterprises: Galileo and Newton, the chemical revolution, Darwin and genetics, electromagnetism, relativity and quantum theory, and the rise of modern cosmology and molecular biology. He organises the story around people and experiments rather than around abstract philosophy of science. The book is a popular consecutive narrative of Western scientific practice from the early modern period onward, not a textbook of laboratory methods.
