History of Western Music

By Peter Burkholder, Donald Jay Grout, Claude V. Palisca · 2008

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This textbook surveys the art music of Europe and its later American extensions from medieval chant and early polyphony through Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic styles to twentieth-century modernism and after. Burkholder, Grout, and Palisca organise the account by period and genre: mass and motet, opera, symphony, and the changing roles of church, court, and public concert. Composers, forms, and theoretical ideas are treated together, with attention to how notation, patronage, and listening habits changed. The book is a consecutive pedagogical history of the Western literate tradition, not a set of isolated composer biographies.
