A Man of Singular Virtue
A Life of Sir Thomas More
By William Roper · 1979
Back to CatalogueWritten in the sixteenth century by More's son-in-law, this is a household memoir of Sir Thomas More rather than a full public history. Roper recalls More's education, the Chelsea household, his rise under Henry VIII, and the daily manners of a man who joked at table while holding high office. The second movement follows More's refusal of the oath tied to the king's marriage and ecclesiastical supremacy, his imprisonment in the Tower, the trial, and his death in 1535. A selection of More's own letters from office and prison is often printed with the Life.
