The History of England from the Accession of James II. Volumes III-V
By Thomas Babington MacAulay · 1986
Back to CatalogueThese later volumes of Macaulay's History of England follow the reign of William III after the Revolution of 1688. They treat the war in Ireland, including the Boyne and the reduction of Jacobite resistance, the Highland and continental campaigns, the death of Mary, the rise of party government, and the diplomatic and financial machinery of a long war with France. The narrative closes with William's death in 1702. The books continue the same political and social history as the opening volumes; they are not a separate work, but the second half of an unfinished national narrative that never reaches the full reign of Anne.
