His Life as He Wrote It

By Benjamin Franklin · 1989

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This volume is a documentary life of Benjamin Franklin assembled from his own writings rather than a new biography in a modern voice. It draws on the unfinished Autobiography together with letters, newspaper pieces, and other first-person papers, arranged in chronological chapters from his Boston apprenticeship and Philadelphia printing years through electrical experiments, colonial politics, the break with Britain, diplomacy in France, and the constitutional settlement. Brief editorial links fill gaps where Franklin is silent. The book presents a selected life in his words, not the complete papers and not a novel.
