Synopsis

This trilogy follows Lyra Belacqua, a child raised at Jordan College in an Oxford that belongs to a parallel world where every person's soul appears as an animal daemon. In the first book she is drawn north toward a mystery of missing children and a substance called Dust. In the second she meets Will Parry, a boy from our world who comes into possession of a knife that can cut windows between worlds. The third carries both into a conflict that reaches the Authority who claims heaven. The work is a fantasy of theology, experimental science, and growing up, told across three novels rather than as a single volume.
