Synopsis

First published in 1845, this novel continues the career of John Jorrocks, the Cockney grocer turned Master of Foxhounds, after he buys a country estate and sets up as a squire. At Hillingdon Hall he experiments with scientific farming, entertains neighbours, and is drawn into local politics, including a parliamentary contest. Hunting days still punctuate the story, but the comedy now turns on rural improvement, agents, and the gap between Jorrocks's City manners and county society. It is the third of the Jorrocks books, a sporting and social satire of early Victorian rural ambition rather than a mystery.
