This three-volume history treats the destruction of the Highland clan order. Glencoe reconstructs the 1692 massacre of MacDonalds by government troops who had accepted their hospitality, and the politics in London and Edinburgh that produced the order. Culloden follows the 1746 battle that ended the Jacobite rising, then the hunting down of Highlanders and the legal assault on clan dress, arms, and tenure. The Highland Clearances describes the later evictions that replaced people with sheep, from landlords' calculations to the emigrant ships. The three books are consecutive narrative histories, not fiction, and can be read as a single argument about a society unmade.
