First published in 1958, this crime novel is set in a small patch of London around a private museum of curiosities kept by the widow Polly Tassie. A charming man she treats as a son, Gerry Hawker, uses her house as a base while Superintendent Charlie Luke and Albert Campion investigate a string of killings. Polly's young niece Annabelle comes to stay; her friend Richard grows suspicious of Gerry and follows him through a day's errands that begin to look like an alibi. The plot turns on what Polly will not see and on how a plausible rogue moves through ordinary streets. It is a thriller of concealment more than a puzzle of unknown identity.
