First published in 1954, this memoir recounts Xan Fielding's years as a British Special Operations Executive agent on German-occupied Crete. Landing in 1942, he is charged with gathering intelligence on Axis movements and with working among Cretan resistance bands in the White Mountains and coastal villages. He describes caves, night signals to submarines, the guiding of colleagues to and from Cairo, and the daily dependence on local families who hid Allied men. The book is a first-person record of clandestine work under occupation, not a history of the whole Cretan campaign or of the later abduction of the German commander.
