First published in 1964, this novel follows Moses Herzog, a middle-aged Jewish scholar in the United States, in the months after his second marriage collapses. His wife Madeleine has left him for his friend Valentine Gersbach. Herzog moves between a ruined house in the Berkshires, New York, and Chicago, writing unsent letters to the living and the dead - philosophers, politicians, lovers, and family. He reviews his childhood, his academic work, and his failures as a husband and father. The action is largely inward, punctuated by visits and one planned confrontation. It is a comic and painful novel of one man's self-examination, not a mystery.
