This history play continues the Wars of the Roses after the Lancastrian Henry VI has lost ground to the house of York. The action runs from the death of Richard Duke of York through the seesaw of Towton, the rift between Edward IV and Warwick the Kingmaker, and the rise of Richard of Gloucester. Margaret of Anjou fights on for her son Edward, Prince of Wales, while Henry himself is often a captive or a bystander to his own cause. Broken oaths, family revenge, and the swapping of the crown drive the scenes. The play is a chronicle of civil war, not a standalone tragedy built around one hero.
