This history play, from the early 1590s, opens after Henry V's death as the infant Henry VI's France unravels. English nobles quarrel in London while Talbot fights to hold French towns against the Dauphin and Joan of Arc, here presented as a martial and supernatural enemy. The Temple Garden scene divides York and Lancaster by plucked roses, and the rivalry of Gloucester and Winchester weakens the war effort. Suffolk captures Margaret of Anjou and plans her marriage to the king. The play is the first part of a sequence about the loss of France and the start of civil faction.
