This history play continues the reign of Henry IV after Shrewsbury. In the north, the Archbishop of York and the remaining rebels bargain and are broken by Prince John. In Eastcheap and Gloucestershire, Falstaff recruits, sponges on Justice Shallow, and waits for Hal's favour. The king, sick and sleepless, confronts the prince over the crown; at the close Hal is Henry V and publicly casts Falstaff off. Tavern comedy and the business of succession run in parallel. The play is a chronicle of the end of a reign, not a standalone comedy of Falstaff.
