First published in 1933, this Blandings Castle novel turns on the Empress of Blandings, Lord Emsworth's prize sow, and on Galahad Threepwood's scandalous memoirs, which his sister Lady Constance is determined to suppress. Guests and schemers gather at the castle and at a nearby cottage: Monty Bodkin, hired as Lord Emsworth's secretary; Beach the butler; a publisher who wants the manuscript; and various young people whose engagements depend on who holds the papers or the pig. The plot is a farce of thefts, alliances, and country-house manoeuvres. It is a comic novel of the Blandings series, not a standalone mystery.
