This volume collects three Conrad sea stories first gathered in 1902. Youth has Marlow recall a disastrous voyage to the East in a leaking coal ship when he was still a very young officer. Heart of Darkness follows his later command of a steamboat up an African river to the ivory agent Kurtz. The End of the Tether concerns Captain Whalley, an aging master who has lost his fortune and takes a partnership in a steamer whose owner wants him gone, while Whalley conceals a failing that threatens the ship. The three pieces share maritime work and the costs of a life at sea; they are not a single novel.
