First published in 1899, this novella is told by Charles Marlow to listeners on a Thames yacht. He recounts his appointment as a steamboat captain for a continental trading company on a great African river, his journey past stations devoted to ivory, and his mission to reach the inner station and its agent Kurtz, who has become a power among the surrounding people. The river voyage, the company's agents, and the figure of Kurtz form the action. The book is a framed tale of colonial trade and one man's report of what he found upriver, not a conventional adventure of rescue or treasure.
