First published in 1869, this novel follows Louis Trevelyan, who marries Emily Rowley and then becomes convinced that her friendship with the elderly Colonel Osborne is an affair. He demands she cut the acquaintance; she refuses the insult; and the marriage collapses into separation, hired watchers, and a fight over their child. Parallel plots follow Emily's sister Nora and the journalist Hugh Stanbury, and the Exeter household of the obstinate Miss Stanbury, whose niece Dorothy is drawn into a quieter courtship. The book is a study of jealousy as a fixed idea, set among London lodgings, cathedral-city respectability, and a flight abroad. It is a domestic novel, not a political one.
