Haydn's Visits to England
The Academy of Ancient Music Directed
By Christopher Hogwood · 1980
Back to CatalogueThis historical account follows Joseph Haydn's two stays in London in 1791-92 and 1794-95, after the death of his Esterhazy patron and an invitation from the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. Hogwood uses Haydn's notebooks and letters, newspaper reports, and contemporary memoirs to reconstruct the Salomon concerts, the composing of the London symphonies, and Haydn's meetings with the court, publishers, and amateur musicians. The book also records the composer's notes on English food, weather, concerts, and social custom. It is a documentary narrative of those visits and the music written for them, not a full life of Haydn from birth to death.
