First published in 1847, this sporting novel follows Thomas Scott, a Yorkshire farmer of Hawbuck Grange, as he travels among foxhound and harrier packs in the north of England. The book is a string of hunting days, inn evenings, and encounters with masters, grooms, and fellow sportsmen rather than a single intrigue. Scott is a gentleman rider more at ease with hounds than with conversation or courtship. Surtees describes runs, country, and the manners of the field with comic exactness. The work is a picture of mid-Victorian hunting life, closer to a sequence of sketches than to a plotted social novel.
