This anthology collects German household tales recorded and reshaped by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early nineteenth century. The title story follows a brother and sister abandoned in a forest who find a house of bread and sugar and must outwit the witch who lives there. Around it stand other short narratives of the collection: peasants and kings, talking animals, cruel stepmothers, and youngest children who survive by luck or cunning. The pieces are oral in origin, often abrupt and severe in their justice. The book is a selection of folk tales rather than a continuous work, presenting the Grimms' printed versions of stories told in German-speaking lands.
