Hamnet

Synopsis

This novel imagines the household in Stratford behind the death of Hamnet, the only son of William Shakespeare and Agnes (Anne Hathaway). It follows Agnes as a woman of herbs and second sight, the marriage, the twins Hamnet and Judith, and the summer when plague reaches the town. The husband is often away in London at the playhouses; the crisis is the child's illness and what the family does with grief. The book stays with the women and children of the house more than with theatrical London. It is historical fiction about a death that later names a play, not a biography of the dramatist.
