Synopsis
First published in 1881, this novel is set at Stancy Castle, a medieval house inherited by Paula Power, daughter of a railway contractor. Paula is the Laodicean of the title: lukewarm in the Baptist faith of her father and slow to choose between two suitors. George Somerset, a young architect, is hired to restore the castle; Captain De Stancy, of the old family, wants the house back through marriage. His illegitimate kinsman Dare uses the telegraph and the camera to advance that claim. The plot turns on modern machinery working inside a Gothic setting.
