Gulliver's Travels or Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World
By Jonathan Swift · 1965
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1726, this satire follows Lemuel Gulliver, an English ship's surgeon, through four voyages to remote nations. He is a giant among the tiny Lilliputians, a miniature among the Brobdingnagians, a visitor to the flying island of Laputa and its distracted projectors, and finally a guest of the rational horses, the Houyhnhnms, who keep brutish human Yahoos. Each land is a mirror for European courts, science, and pride. Gulliver returns more alienated after each trip. The book is a travel narrative used as political and moral invective, not a children's adventure, though the first voyage is often read that way.
