Published in 1726, this satire presents itself as the travel memoir of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon who is wrecked or marooned four times. In Lilliput he is a giant among courtiers whose party quarrels and wars are minute; in Brobdingnag he is a curiosity in a land of giants whose king finds European politics contemptible. A third voyage takes him to the flying island of Laputa and to projectors who extract sunbeams from cucumbers. The last strand leaves him among the rational horses, the Houyhnhnms, and the brutish Yahoos who resemble his own species. The book uses each country to measure English law, science, pride, and the human body.
