This children's novel, the third in The Dark Is Rising sequence, brings Will Stanton together with the Drew children in the Cornish harbour of Trewissick. A local rite makes a Greenwitch from branches and casts it into the sea; the Old Ones and their enemies both want what the figure may hold, including knowledge tied to a recovered grail. Jane's unplanned sympathy for the Greenwitch becomes part of the struggle. The story mixes village custom, the rising dark, and the children's ordinary holiday. It is a fantasy of ritual and possession rather than a quest across many countries.
