First published in 1916, this thriller sends Richard Hannay, now in the army, on an intelligence mission into wartime Germany and the Ottoman lands. A dying agent leaves a few clues about a German plan to raise the Muslim world against the Allies through a prophetic figure called Greenmantle. Hannay travels in disguise with the American Blenkiron, the Boer tracker Peter Pienaar, and his friend Sandy Arbuthnot, who can move inside the East. The plot runs through cities, winter roads, and a campaign in Anatolia. It is a wartime adventure about rumours, identity, and a religious rising used as a weapon.
