Synopsis
First published in 1879, this book is a sequence of letters from Isabella Bird's 1873 travels in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. She rides alone through snow and spring thaw, stays in cabins and mining camps, and spends a long interval at Estes Park. A recurring figure is Jim Nugent, a mountain guide with a violent reputation, who accompanies her on high routes. The letters record weather, altitude, food, horses, and the thin settlements of a frontier still being occupied. It is travel narrative, not a general history of the West.
