Synopsis
This collection presents English history as a sequence of short, self-contained episodes, from prehistoric and Roman Britain through medieval kings, rebels, and churchmen to later centuries. Typical sketches treat a named person or incident - a chronicler, a battle, a queen, a fire, a scientist - in a few pages, then move on. Lacey aims to test familiar stories against what the sources will bear. There is no single hero and no continuous novelistic plot. The book is a popular chronicle in vignettes, not an academic survey of one period and not a textbook.
