First published in 1860-61, this novel follows Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, a village boy who helps an escaped convict on the marshes and is later summoned to Satis House, where Miss Havisham and her ward Estella teach him to be ashamed of his home. A secret benefactor then lifts him to a London gentleman's life, which he believes he understands. The story moves between the forge, the decaying house, and the legal and criminal worlds of the capital. Pip's education, his debts, and his feeling for Estella form the plot. It is a first-person novel of class, gratitude, and mistaken assumptions.
