Goodbye to All That

By Robert Graves · 1981

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1929, this autobiography runs from Graves's late-Victorian childhood and years at Charterhouse through his service with the Royal Welch Fusiliers in the First World War and his attempt at a postwar life in England. The central chapters describe trench fighting in France, including Loos and the Somme, wounds, hospitals, and the friendship with Siegfried Sassoon. He writes about army ritual, fear, and the gap between the front and civilians. The later pages cover marriage, parenthood, and his decision to leave the country he no longer recognises. The book is a personal narrative of school, war, and aftermath, not a general history of the war.
