God's Englishman
Oliver Cromwell and the English Revolution
By Christopher Hill · 2013
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1970, this biographical study of Oliver Cromwell follows the East Anglian gentleman from the parliamentary crises of the 1640s through the Civil Wars, the trial of Charles I, the Irish and Scottish campaigns, and the Protectorate. Hill sets Cromwell inside the religious and social conflicts of the English Revolution: Independents, the army, property, and the problem of settlement after victory. The book treats politics and Puritan conviction together rather than separating the soldier from the preacher. It is an interpretive life of a revolutionary head of state, not a campaign diary.
