This selection presents Christina Rossetti's verse, led by the 1862 narrative Goblin Market, in which sisters Laura and Lizzie meet goblin merchants who sell dangerous fruit. Laura eats and wastes; Lizzie resists and attempts a rescue. Around that poem the volume gathers lyrics and narrative pieces on love, faith, death, seasons, and the lives of women, including sonnets and devotional poems. The voice is plain and often hymn-like, with repeated images of shops, gardens, brides, and graves. The book is a poetry collection rather than a single story: one long fairy-tale fable and a body of shorter lyrics from the same author.
