This pairing joins two Highland histories. Glencoe reconstructs the 1692 massacre, when government troops billeted on the MacDonalds of Glencoe rose and killed their hosts after a delayed oath of allegiance to William III; Prebble follows the clan, the Campbell-led companies, and the politics in London and Edinburgh. Culloden follows the 1746 battle that ended the Jacobite rising, then the hunt for Charles Edward Stuart and the punishment of the glens. Both books use contemporary letters, orders, and testimony. They are narrative histories of two episodes, not a general history of Scotland.
