Published in 1966, this history reconstructs the Massacre of Glencoe on 13 February 1692, when government troops quartered on the Macdonalds of Glencoe turned on their hosts. Prebble traces the highland clan world, the requirement that chiefs swear allegiance to William III after the Glorious Revolution, MacIain's delayed oath, and the orders that came down through the Earl of Stair. He follows the Campbell-led companies of Argyll's regiment, the dawn killings, the flight into winter, and the inquiries that followed. The book is a political and social narrative of one glen used to enforce a new settlement on the Highlands.
