First published in Bengali in 1910 and in Tagore's own English version in 1912, Gitanjali is a sequence of short lyric poems offered as songs. The speaker addresses a divine beloved in the language of longing, absence, humility, and sudden joy, using images of flute, lamp, road, garment, and the turning day. There is no narrative plot: the book is a cycle of devotion in which the self is repeatedly unmade and called. Some poems stay close to household tasks and the weather; others speak of death as a meeting. It is religious lyric, not argument or story.
