Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

The Illuminating Diary of a Professional Lady

By Anita Loos · 1985

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1925, this comic novel is cast as the diary of Lorelei Lee, a blonde from Little Rock who treats jewels, gentlemen, and improving books as interchangeable assets. She travels from New York to Europe with her friend Dorothy, collecting admirers, gifts, and misunderstandings while recording everything in a voice that sounds naive and is not. The plot is a string of courtships, shopping, and social climbing rather than a single intrigue. Lorelei's education, her taste in men, and her talent for turning scandal into advantage are the running joke. The book is a satire of Jazz Age money and manners written as a gold-digger's self-portrait.
